It has been well documented that patients demonstrating Class III malocclusions are most effectively treated and corrected with non-surgical means at an early age. When Maria came to my office at age 17 for orthodontic treatment, surgical correction was the first and most appropriate recommendation I could offer her. She and her mother were both of the same mind regarding surgery. They wanted to do anything possible short of surgery, to help correct her dental problems. After many disclaimers and forewarnings of limited possibilities for success, I agreed to treat her with orthodontics only.
Maria’s determination and cooperation with multiple appliances and continual elastic wear were the main factors in any success achieved in her treatment. Following her treatment, the before and after photos have been used to motivate patients with less severe malocclusions to continue the battle. Her success is a great motivator for other patients, and even, and maybe especially for me as well.
