A Creative Approach to Function and Esthetics: Cosmetic Options in Tandem with Minor Tooth Movement

A technique that offers both versatility and creativity in dentistry today is the application of minor tooth movement as it relates to not only improved orthodontic function, but enhanced esthetics. This orthodontic treatment option combines the ability to move teeth utilizing plastic aligners and thermopliers®. The true caveat of this method imparts a minimally invasive approach to patient care that blends fundamental mechanics while setting the stage for a pleasing esthetic result.

Strictly speaking, minor tooth movement (MTM®) involves the movement of 1-4 teeth per arch using continuous, gentle force. Traditional orthodontic movements such as rotation, tipping, and lateral positioning can be achieved by the patient wearing an in-office fabricated aligner. Upon each return patient visit, gentle pressure is applied to the aligner using thermopliers® that are specifically designed to create an intentional force point. These force points in turn guide tooth movement up to 1mm per month, resulting in corrected or improved alignment. The majority of cases treated in this fashion are completed in 6 months or less.
